Never mind - I found an answer while doing some research on SuddenLink,
which just took over Cox here. I right-clicked on the group, chose the
"Local Files" tab and clicked
"reset". Then it downloaded new stuff.

Right click on the newsgroup in the Folder Tree and Reset. Click on
another folder, or newsgroup and then return. All messages available on
the server will be downloaded again.

Follow up by Right clicking on the newsgroup again, and Compact.
