Hi PA Bear,
The error seems to happen at random intervals. Sometimes it happens right
while I'm composing a message; other times it happens while I'm using
another application. I'm guessing that it happens while OE is checking for
new messages -- even after the error message pops up, I can still select
the text in the message I was composing and copy it to the clipboard.
(This is quite handy, because as soon as I dismiss the error message, OE
shuts down.)
Here's what the even log has to say about it:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Application Error
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1000
Description:
Faulting application msimn.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00064ed1.
Is there any way to rip out OE completely and reinstall from scratch? I
tried following various instructions I found online, using Add/Remove
Windows Components to uninstall it, then tweaking the registry, rebooting,
and reinstalling -- but it doesn't seem to actually uninstall and
reinstall. The "reinstall" takes only a couple of seconds, not even long
enough to launch the windows installer, so it seems like it's just
flipping a bit that says "it's uninstalled" or "it's installed", and not
really trying to reconfigure from scratch.

/When/ do you get this error (e.g., when you open OE)?
Start he http://www.insideoe.com/problems/errors.htm#crash
General OE Caveats:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a
manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.
- WinXP SP2 only: Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown
your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place.
- WinXP SP2 only: If your machine is fully up-to-date at Windows Update,
installing the following patch (KB918766) will help to avoid such data
loss in the futu
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-98af2256ccc3
This patch will be included in the next Cumulative Update for Outlook
Express/WinXP SP2.
- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
