overloaded newsgroup - DA
Compact your folders, close and reopen OE and see if that newsgroup is more
responsive.
Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.
If that does not help, go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now.
Select that newsgroup at the top and then Reset, followed up with Compact.
Reset will remove and re-download all messages on the server for that
newsgroup.
Now if you don't want to download all three months of posts, do this first.
If you want to download newsgroups, but don't want hundreds, or thousands,
of messages, you can create a message rule such as this:
Tools | Message Rules | News.
Box 1: Where the message was sent more than days ago
Box 2: Delete it & Stop processing more rules
Box 3: Click on "Days" and choose the # of days you want.
Name the rule.
In Tools | Options | Read - Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. When you go
to, or subscribe to a newsgroup, it will only download the messages for the
number of days you selected.

I use outlook express to monitor these Microsoft newsgroups. Some of the
ones I use seem to have too much stuff and since I only care to keep a copy
of my old posts, so I don't ask the same dumb question twice, I am in the
process of copying only these posts into a separate folder. Then I delete
all the old posts, except mine, in the newsgroup, say monthly. This seem
to help immeasurably with the daily re-load time of OE newsgroups, which
was becoming a big problem. However, there is one newsgroup,
windowxp.general where the number of threads is almost 1 million, only 7 of
which are mine. I would like to save them also, but when ever I highlight
that newsgroup, even when I get it to go as far as only showing just my 7
threads, OE become non-responsive. I have tried it many times. I suppose
the best thing would be to simply try to delete the newsgroup - I'm not
sure it will even let me do that - and resubscribe, but how do I stop it
from downloading 1 million threads again. Also, will I be able to get my
seven threads back?
Help, please.
