Default Mutli-part attachments do not combine - Help!

The sender is using OE6 with 'break apart messages' activated. He has sent
large (about 2Mb) *.jpg files which arrive in my OE6 as multiple smaller
files (about 500Kb each) each with extension *.dat. They are not
automatically combined as they should be. If I select all the parts of the
received file and then use 'Combine and Decode' to ensure they are in the
correct order and then click OK I get message 'Combining the messages'. I
then get a receive window containing just one of the parts, still with
extension *.dat.

I remember some time ago I was able to receive such messages successfully
and they combined automatically without using 'Combine and decode'. Now
there appears to be no way it will work! What can the problem be?

OE will attempt to automatically combine E-mail messages if they are
downloaded together. For Newsgroups, it must be done manually.

In what way does combine and decode not work?

You must highlight all the parts first. And all the parts must all be
there.

When you select Combine and Decode you must reorder the parts in the
dialog presented unless they are already in order.

And when done, OE should present you with a single message with the
combined message and hopefully decoded attachment. But if it's an
encoding method that OE doesn't support, such as yEnc, then you'll be left
with a large text message which you'll need to save and use a manual
decoder on.

My OE6 works fine in all respects except when receiving large attachments
which have been split into smaller multiple parts by the sender's OE6. I
remember some time ago this used to work ok but now the parts do not
combine automatically nor does 'combine and decode' work.

What is wrong??

I am using WinXP SP2 fully updated.
