Default Mutli-part attachments do not combine - Help!

The sender is using OE6 with 'break apart messages' activated. He has
sent large (about 2Mb) *.jpg files which arrive in my OE6 as multiple
smaller files (about 500Kb each) each with extension *.dat. They are not
automatically combined as they should be. If I select all the parts of
the received file and then use 'Combine and Decode' to ensure they are in
the correct order and then click OK I get message 'Combining the
messages'. I then get a receive window containing just one of the parts,
still with extension *.dat.

I remember some time ago I was able to receive such messages successfully
and they combined automatically without using 'Combine and decode'. Now
there appears to be no way it will work! What can the problem be?

And if you save that and change the extension to JPG instead of dat?

The saved file is about the same size as one of the parts. Changing the
extension to .jpg does not turn the file into a picture, it is still an
unreadable data file. When it used to work some time ago it was entirely
automatic, no extension changing was necessary!
