As others indicate, Dell probably supplied an anti-spam program that
created the spam folder. Antispam programs and antivirus software set to
scan email mess up OE's message store and result in message loss. see

I would recommend uninstalling any such software, particularly if its
Norton, as Norton can result in a 30 % reduction in the machine's
performance and also screws up OE bigtime.

My son has recently bought a new Dell w/xp & ie6, OE6 which is configured
with a 'spam' folder.
