Right click in the toolbar area, enable the Advanced Toolbar, and use the dropdown to ensure you are using the Messages view and not anything else, like Unread Messages or Messages from the Last 7 Days.

After furious head scratching, bkaras asked:

| I rebooted my computer to no avail.
