Although I have always had e-mail scanning turned off in AVG Free,
on
Thursday night I disabled it in Manage/Services & Applications and,
lo! no more tiresome message re `no connection available`.
Coincidence maybe?
What did I tell you about the quick route? ;-)
And remember, nntp is not email. Apart from that, you cannot even be
sure
that the anti-virus program really doesn't touch your email or any
other
whereabouts of the email program if you switch "email scanning" off.
It's
a matter of definition and how the scanning works.

I did not know that AVG E-mail Scanning was listed in Services, Kai!
It was only when I was considering stopping DNS again that I noticed
it there. Disabling the plug-in in AVG always worked before with
v.7.1 (see my reply to Bruce Hagen).
