Default Unread message count

When I log in in the morning, the number of unread message in a
newsgroup (any newsgroup) is shown as, say, 900 but, on refreshing
that number is reduced to, say, 200..

Just out of curiosity, what is happening here?

You are most likely set to download x00 messages at a time rather than all
messages, and to download NEW headers. As a result, OE only downloads new
headers, not the older but still unread ones.

You can either click Catch-Up to remove them all, or, after you've marked an
All Read, leave the group, come back to it, and click Headers in the top
menu; that will download older headers.

Or, remove the restrictions on download New Headers only. It's all in the
Tools, Options.
