After you select the file, click the little down arrow at the lower left corner of the file dialog. You should see an option to insert as hyperlink.

I would like a way to link documents, and publisher files right to my
appointments. I found this the other day and was so excited. I have found
that it is not useful though because if I update the file when I'm in the
appointment box it does not change the original file and vice versa. I have
tried creating a new *.doc and inserting it as an object but I always get the
message that it can't open the object. I read somewhere here that it happens
because the versions are different but they are not. I'm on XP with Office
2003 for everything. I would just like a link to the actual file not a
"copy" of the file attached to the appointment.
