Default Second e mail account

Late addition:

I just happened to stumble on another reason why, in cases like this,
it is indeed better to use an extra identity instead of an extra account
(under the same identity).

I had made a Message Rule to forward certain messages to my wife's
e-mail address. However the rule did not work and failed silently. I.e.
when tested with "Apply Now ...", it just said "Your rule(s) have been
applied to the folder ..."/[OK], but no message was sent/forwarded.
However when forwarding to another email address (than my wife's) it
worked correctly.

To cut a long story short: The cause was that *my* computer (i.e.
*identity*) still had an *account* for my *wife's* e-mail address. OE
'knew' that and was 'smart' enough not to forward to my wife's e-mail
address, probably in order not to create endless loops. After changing
the e-mail address in the account for my wife's e-mail address, the
forwarding Message Rule worked correctly.

I.e. in this case the extra account created a problem.

I haven't tested it, but I assume that if I had used the extra account
under an extra identity, the problem would not have occured. Perhaps
Frank Saunders can confirm/deny this?

I hope this helps someone.

I have his permission to do this and know his email name and password. I
would like to be able to read his mail as well as mine.

I realize there may be security issues involved.

If you only need to *read* his mail (i.e. not reply, archive, etc.),
then the answer is in your subject line, i.e. you just need an extra
Mail *Account* (Tools - Accounts... - Mail - Add- Mail... - ...),
not an extra *Identity*.

See also Ron's response about "Leave a copy of messages on the
server".

Since it a different person I would definitely use a different Identity.

I gladly take your word/advice.

You have much more experience with this than I. To be [f|F]rank :-), I
never used multiple identities in OE (I (think I) did in its
pre-decessor ("Internet Mail"?)). I already have enough problems with
one identity :-), so I wimp out and use additional accounts instead of a
different Identity.

Multiple users, multiple identities per user and multiple accounts per
identity, all on one machine. The mind boggles! :-)

After getting the account name and password and the server names make sure
to go to the Advanced tab and check the box to leave a copy on the server.
The friend should check that plus the two boxes below it.
