I know these were posted a few months ago, but as of a couple of months prior
to THIS post, yahoo accounts can be "popped" without having to subscribe to
the premium service, and without having to install third party software, even
though yahoo still says it doesn't do it in some parts of their website.

Here's what to do: make sure you're using mail beta, go to options and
there's a section for mail in the left-hand pane. Click here and there will
be a list of mail options, including POP access and forwarding. Click on
this, then select the option to allow POP access and save. Now when you run
Outlook or another client just set up a new email account and it should
autodetect the server settings. If it doesn't contact Yahoo customer support
and they should give you alternative ports if they clash with your existing
email account (sometimes it helps to change the smtp from 25 to 587). There
are also instructions on the yahoo site somewhere (I can't remember where
though )

This might be old news, but I thought I would have to upgrade to mail plus
to pop the account until I tried it. There's also a program that configures
all your pop accounts, called FreePOPS, but it takes some mucking around to
get it going.

If they permit POP3 access, then they will publish the server names in
the help section of their web sites.

On Yahoo for example, it appears that you have to subscribe to their
'Mail Plus' service for POP3 privileges. I don't know about Hotmail. I
use Gmail and they have no special requirements.
