Thank you very much. The Microsoft document had the cure. As
suggested, we registered OE as the default mail handler and the
scanner was able to send scanned documents directly to email.
Greatly appreciate the help

OLEXP: "Send To" and E-mail Links Do Not Work with Outlook Express
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098
Also, in Windows XP: Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Set Program
Access and Defaults, Email
However, it may be that the scanner requires a Full MAPI compatible
mail program. OE is Simple MAPI and might not meet the scanner
needs. In any case, you have more control if you save the image to a
file from the scanner program, then start a mail message and attach
the image file.

Our scanner is an Hp 5300C and our OS is WXp Home. We recently
purchased an HP Pavilion 9010 laptop and are having difficulty with
the scanner sending scans to Outlook Express. OE is listed as a
destination in the scanner software but when we try to send a scan
to outgoing mail we receive the following error message:
"MAPIDEST
Send mail failed to send message"
The scanner seems to be working fine and we can send scans to any
other program (Word, Photoshop, Paint, etc.). the problem is
limited to OE.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
