XP2, IE6.0, OE6.0. This is probably new behavior since 1/1/07 but I have
only recently become aware of it. It appears specific to this computer.
The R&R of the DBX folders seems drastic but will do if I must; please
advise.
1. Tools Options Maintenance Store folder will reveal the location of
your identity's store (
http://www.insideoe.com/files/store.htm#storemain).
Write it down.
In WinXP, Win2K and Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show
Hidden Files and Folders under Start Control Panel Folder Options
View.
2. Close OE.
3. Navigate to your store, find and delete "Search Folder.dbx" as well as
any instances of "Search Folder (1).dbx", "Search Folder (2).dbx", etc.
4. Open OE.
5. Move any messages you want to keep that are in Sent Items or Deleted
Items to other folders you've created for this purpose.
6. Compact all folders (
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#compact).
7. If still no joy, close OE, find & delete "Folders.dbx" in your store. Do
doing so means that you will lose the mail tree structure (Folders pane),
the list of newsgroups on all newsservers, all synchronization
options/settings, and most message rules will need to be edited.
General OE Caveats:
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm
- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.
- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
