You need to compact the OE database after deleting messages from folders
in order to remove the wasted space. That should then reduce the size of
the folders.
Do a File | Folder | Compact all and see if that reduces the size.

I use a backup program to copy to my USB stick, and was wondering why
this took so long...
The deleted items is a file of 11 307 kb !?!?
And I tell OE to empty the deleted items box when I quit the program.
