Default missing calendar items

I don't know why but all of my single instance calendar items prior to
January 1st have inexplicably disappeared from my calendar. There isn't
anything I recall doing, I haven't been messing aruond with any settings, and
I long ago turned off Autoarchive that is still off - but suddenly everything
is gone. Stupidly I don't have a back-up. Does anyone have any idea what
might have happened and more importantly how I might recover the missing
items??
