Default No Toolbar

I'm trying to assist an elderly neighbor with a one-month old Dell {WinXP
Home/OE6}. Today, she completely lost her entire Toolbar. When I go to
'Layout,' the Toolbar box was checked. I checked/unchecked - no
difference. When I checked the Toolbar box, the 'Customize Toolbar' button
would appear 'active' - but no customize screen would come up. Nothing
happens when you click on the Customize Toolbar button.

Yesterday evening, I thought I would help her by 'compacting' her folders.
I went 'off-line' and clicked the 'Compact' button. It appeared to function
normally. My neighbor is thinking maybe what I did [compacting her folders]
caused the problem. I'm thinking there's no connection - just a timewise
coincidence.

I'm totally stuck. Nothing I did brought back the Toolbar. Send/Receive
functions - just no buttons.

Thanks - james
