Too many mails in Inbox? Never compact Inbox folder?

I have been running OE6 for several years trouble free. About two months

messages in my Inbox, but I haven't made any changes to OE. The box on

Free to detect viruses, both of which seem fine. My ISP watched the
messages
on their server while I watched them download onto my computer, but they
didn't get deleted from the server for some time.
A typical event will show emails downloading (1 of 33, for example) from
my
ISP, then ten minutes later the same emails will download, plus any new
ones.
Eventually the copies stop, but it's a pain.
What's the best solution here? I'd like to keep my present messages and
data.
