The Combine and Decode should work with messages in an OE local folder.
It does for me.
What exactly happens? How far do you get?

Michael,
Yes it is with yEnc that the hyperlink pain occurs....but I can live
with that. Typically I decode after the OE combine and decode and
saving the results to my hard drive...ie Windows not OE. But since it
is a time consuming process even with 1GB memory and a Pent 4, 2.53
processor I want to move the parts, (example 01 of 22 to 22 of 22) to
a non newsgroup folder for working with when I have time. I can make
the copy in a folder but OE will not combine the example as it does
while in the newsgroup folder.
Is there an app which might do this?

I was addressing the searching for hyperlinks problem you mention.
Are you perhaps dealing with yEnc encoding? Even with preview pane
turned off, you'll get the hyperlinks problem once the message is
combined and decoded. If so, the best way to handle that is with a
proxy type yEnc decoder. That converts the yEnc to Uuencode on which
OE can then decode. See the yEnc section of
Decoding Internet Attachments - A Tutorial
http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/decode.htm
You also mention moving messages to a local folder and doing the
combine and decode later. I'm not clear your issue of " I cannot
open a batch at a time". Are you perhaps having one message with 5
parts and another message with 3 parts and wanting to do the combine
and decode on the 8 parts to get the 2 attachments? That won't work
if any of the messages used MIME/Base64 encoding. If they all used
Uuencode, that might work.

Gave up Preview Pane long ago...other suggestions?

If using OE5 and above, turn off the Preview Pane (View, Layout) to
avoid the delays with OE searching for hyperlinks. You can add a
button to the tool bar for this.

Parts are in the usegroup folder - not the Inbox. Here they are
manageble albeit slow while "Searching for Hyperlinks".....so I
moved them to local folders created separately for their storage.
Then I can empty the news group folder and work with the parts
stored locally at a later time. My problem is that this then
requires that each part be opened separately (very cumbersome). I
cannot open a batch at a time with "Combine and Decode".

The multi-parts are in your Inbox? Try it in reverse. Move all
your other messages to a local folder leaving only the multi-part
message. Next, compact your folders and then try to assemble the
message.
Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no
folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click
Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all
folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.
General precautions for Outlook Express:
Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually
become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing
mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder
regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default
folders as empty as is feasible.
After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually
while working *offline* and do it often.
Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no
folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click
Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all
folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed.
Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a
redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a
multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting
changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you
sufficiently. For more, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3
In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in
background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.
And backup often.

Hello,
Recently I splurged and signed up for cable internet but still
subscribe to MSN. Anyway with the increased download speeds and
access to newsgroups provided by the cable company I have tried
downloading large multipart messages....no problem. However if I
don't combine and decode and save elsewhere the parts fill up
the folder.....so I tried moving the downloads to a "Local
Folders" folder. This completed I can then open each individual
part but cannot "Combine and decode" multiple parts. Using OE 6.
Any advice will be appreciated.
