Default Can Outlook 2003 import its own ics files properly?

Ah yes it does, coz it syncs with Itunes and an Ipod.

And without Outlook, it wouldnt sync. Coz Outlook is needed for it to sync.

So, the contacts and calendar (whatever you've entered end up on the Ipod).
Which is working.

So if it can do this, why cant it do it the other way round?

Well I didnt actually export anything.

After I had entered the contacts/info in the calendar (In Outlook), I
ran Itunes and connected the Ipod to Sync them. Which was fine.

Then your beef is with iTunes, not Outlook. You're "accusing" the wrong
product. Outlook doesn't have anything to do with synching. That's the
responsibility of the sync software.
