Default IE 7 bug caused my system to crash- beware

It's not much of a fix though- the new driver is striped down- and no longer
offers the features of the Director program- all it will do is allow you to
run the scanner from within the MS Picture Viewer.

HP is a disgrace for not really fixing the Director program. My scanner may
be several years old but works perfectly- if it has proper software to run
on a system with IE7. Yes, yes, I know- it's old and no company has to
support old stuff- but it's a black mark against HP as far as I'm concerned.

Good thing scanners are now rather cheap- so I'll go buy a non HP scanner.

Be aware that there is a problem with HPDirector and IE7.... HP have a fix
for it on their site:

I'm responding to Gerry's message of Jan. 19 - where he replied to my
problem with my scanjet 4570c and IE 7. At that time I had to reinstall
my entire system after it progressively went south. Of course I didn't
reinstall IE 7.

I now have a new Dell with Vista. I just went to the link that Gerry
gives and I see that HP does offer a Vista "basic" driver but warns it
won't offer all the features. After the nightmare I went through due to
this problem I'm cautious about downloading this driver on my new Dell.
Perhaps I'd be better off buying a new scanner that is fully Vista
compatible. HP says here that it won't be offering a full Vista driver
for this scanjet. Sheesh! I'm not happy about this!

Has anyone here downloaded this Vista driver?

Several weeks ago, I discovered that IE 7 was automatically
downloaded- so I installed it. Then I started having problems- I
couldn't run HP's Director program for printers, scanners and all in
one units. Because I'm always making changes to my computer, I didn't
connect the dots back to the IE 7 installation.

As I tried to fix Director, my computer became ever more unstable
until I had to reformat and reinstall everything, which made me
rather unhappy- especially not knowing what caused the problem.

So, I was happy to read in the Feb. issue of PC World that this is a
known problem- IE7 causes the Director program to fail. On page 47,
it does give an URL to a fix.

So, beware of this bug, unless you like formatting and reinstalling
everything!
