Also, be sure to warn them about phishing scams and be sure they NEVER click
a link in a spam!

Tools:
Antivirus software AVG is good.
firewall (ZoneAlarm is good and still free)
spyware detectors, IFF you think they would run them.
Adaware, Spybot, windows defender are good ones.
