Default why do inbox items disappear, although they are still there

Check your View settings and change it to All Messages, not just
unread ones or those younger than XX number of days.

OK so far.

You should not
use your Inbox for storage. Make a subfolder of the Inbox to save
items.

Not true at all. There's nothing wrong with keeping messages in the Inbox,
if that's what's desired. Moreover, if you want to manage messages by
keeping them in separate folders, there's nothing that says those folders
need to be under the Inbox. They can be on the same level as Inbox or they
can be in completely separate PSTs.
