email very slow

I have had this happen twice, OE 6.0 trying to download 3 emails but
`timing out` so cant get at my incoming email, the last time I did a reboot
and that sorted it but not happening this time.
What causes this?
and is there a way to stop say those 3 from downloading to get my other
emails? (I get about 20 a day)
Last time I thought maybe a large file but not the case.
