If you are running Norton Anti-virus set to scan e-mail, it is known to
intermittently cause problems trying to switch identities. In that
case, disable the e-mail scanning function.

Because I have a lot of domains/email addresses I have to disperse
them over
several identities.
When I try to switch between IDs it often takes several attempts to
get the
instruction to work - very often the system reverts to default ID.
Any ideas as to what may be the problem ?
