There's not much you can do from the OE side to prevent this.

However, if you go to View | Layout and uncheck the folder list and only
check the folder bar, then is much more difficult to inadvertently delete a
folder.

Try that.

Thanks, Bruce, I understand what you are saying. I still have a
question, however. How are the Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items, &
Deleted Items folders protected from inadvertent deletion. I have
made this same mistake when trying to delete a message from one
of these folders, but the folder can not be deleted...even when I
press Shift Delete, then click the Y (Yes) key it simply blinks
at me and does not delete the folder. I would like to change the
settings on some of my other folders to get this same protection
against inadvertend deletion.
