Are they in the "Deleted Items" folder? If not, they have been
permanently deleted either because you deleted them from the "Deleted
Items" folder or used Shift+Del to *permanently* delete them.

If you or Outlook Express has not yet compacted the .dbx files then the
delete-marked items have not yet been physically purged from the .dbx
files. Go Google on DBXtract or DBXpress on utilities to yank out
delete-marked items that still exist in the database files.
