In Outlook Express I can send e-mails, but see none coming in, including
those I have sent to myself to test the system. I have re-input the
smtp address 'smtp.freeserve.co.uk" and also tried substituting that
with 'smtp.orangehome.co.uk'
In both cases 'send and receive' produces 'Authorising' and then a
Log-on Dialogue box asks for 'Please enter your user name and password
for the server' . Entering them achieves nothing.

Tried everything short of messing with registry. A 'system restore' seems
to have done the trick. Will it be a permanent solution I wonder?

What anti-virus are you using?
Are you using an anti-spam program?
