I'm guessing that you see an EML attachment, and when you open that, you
see the gibberish.

The EML file is the forwarded message. That you see the gibberish
indicates that the file association is wrong for EML files on your PC
and so they are opening in the wrong program (e.g. they are opening in a
word processor rather than Outlook Express).
