We're all getting older. ;^) I too "remember" having previously read
articles that I can never find later.
Afaik, Hotmail is turning into Windows Live Mail, or Live Hotmail, whatever
they want to call it, which can harvest mail from pop3 accounts. If yours
hasn't converted yet, there should be a button offering to do it for you.

Thanks all of you for your responses but I still believe that hotmail can
be
configured to accept non hotmail accounts having previously seen an
article
describing the process (Cannot locate the source). What happened prior to
Live hotmail?

Hotmail Plus provides the ability to access other pop3 accounts provided
those accounts permit pop3 access.
The Pop3 option is only available after confirmation of payment for the
Live Hotmail Plus account.
If SSL is required, it is suggested that the Hotmail account be
converted, if not already done, to a Live Hotmail account especially if
a different incoming port number(besides 110) and SSL
connection/encryption are required.

Hotmail Plus *might* include POP3 forwarding.
If you're running WinXP or Vista, you can access your Hotmail and POP3
accounts in Windows Live Mail (still in beta):
