You're not alone with this head-scratcher. No resolutions yet. See this
recent, related & ongoing thread in OE General newsgroup:

Please don't post "Me, too!" replies to any of the above threads. Thank
you.
PS: Most of us find that the behavior occurs even if no newsgroups have been
accessed during the current instance of OE...and even if the user doesn't
use OE for news.

2.5G Cpu & 1G Mem
Although I've done compacting, turned off email scanning, renamed folders
.pld, emptied all default folders, etc., none of these things have solved
the problem.
Although I've seen many posts reguarding the "out of memory" notice and
subsequent NG lock-up, I've not seen any resolutions.
Since this problem is occuring on many different NGs, it's obviously a OE
problem. Since I've been able to download hundreds of messages without a
problem, until recently, I'm guessing that it has to do with a recent OE
"upgrade/patch"
In all the remarks made about this problem, it seems that the
"memory-lock-up" occurs at around 3.8M of viewed messages. This suggests
that there has been a "limit" placed on the amount of space allocated for
viewed messages.
Does anyone have an idea where the viewed messages are stored and if there
is a way to adjust the storage size?
