Because you are using left-click drag and drop which defaults to a new
Meeting. use right-click drag and drop and choose an Appointment option.

How do I make a calendar appointment when I have a contact open? I see
how to email a meeting but I don't want to do this just to make the
appoinment. As far as I can see the only way do do this is to open the
calendar and enter from there.
