Default Import/Export backed-up Win98OE to new WinXPOE

An older Inbox of that size is most likely corrupted and thus will not
import. You can buy a $5 program called DBXtract that will attempt to
recover messages from that old Inbox to a folder as EML files and then you
can drag/drop those EML files into a folder you create in Outlook Express
for archival purposes. But please do not copy them to the Inbox as you only
invite corruption again in your new, empty Inbox. Read about DBXtract at
this link:

I am in the same bind, I formatted a larger drive, installed XP and had
copied the Identities folder, the dbx messages, to a CD to be 'imported'
into the new OE. But everytime I tried to import them (after unchecking
the
read only on all dbx files), OE import wizard ALWAYS said the folder was
in
use and I could not import. I can't DO the import without OE open, there
is
no Mail icon in my Control Panel.

I made 'absolutely sure' I was importing from the folder, the Outlook
Express folder, I created on the C: drive where I copied the folder from
the
backup CD. After that import 'feature' never worked, I opened 2 Explore
windows and copied the individual dbx files from the folder to the OE
folder, all the dbx files including the folder.dbx. Most of these worked
fine (I chose to overwrite the existing) in the copy over process.

The only one that didn't was the Inbox, along with it's subfolders which
were my most Important.

Could any of this problem have to do with the fact that the Identities are
different numbers? ..... the long 20 digit number that OE gives to the
identity?
I did copy the individual dbx files btw, not the identity number.

Would you or anyone know of a way I can get my 'old Inbox' into OE or
better
yet, merge the two? The current Inbox has 4 messages that were delivered
since I've been on this new setup, the old Inbox has a size of 444,738kb.

TIA
katy

If you are trying to import the info from the CD, it will always fail

since
a Read-Only attribute is set when anything is copied to a CD. You need
to
copy the appropriate files (all DBX and WAB files to a separate folder on
your hard drive) then select all the files and clear the Read only
attribute. Then open Outlook Express and use its menu,

File/Import/Messages
and File/Import/Address Book. See also the information at this link
about
backup/restore operations for Outlook Express:

I've tried multi different ways to get my old OE folders, messages and
Address Book to my new computer. I'm just about blind after reading
ALL
Microsoft site's data and other tech help sites and ?I've read the "One
way
to export address book entries is to export as a CSV file", etc. -
still
nothing specifically applies here - maybe because I did not back up as

per
OEEXP's -? (simple, complete, or partial)? I saved to CD-RW's all data
and
can't get the most recent Address Book, folders or messages. I found
three
.wab address books, but they are old(2000) and some old .dbx files
(also
old)
in a backup folder of OE. I might have goofed when I deleted the ~
file
icons when they appeared on the old desktop (didn't know they were
backups).
Can't someone PLEASE help me?
Thank you so much in advance!!!
Thanks in advance
