Default Can the address book be corrupted?

I've changed everything possible and still having the same problems..
Some of the symptoms:
After being online for a time and deleting posts they suddenly won't delete
anymore - I usually get a message that the item cannot be deleted but
nothing more.
At that time, if I try to compact all folders I get a message that the
folder file is in use and cannot be compacted.
Sometimes I'll open an email with an embedded image and instead of the image
appearing I get a blank rectangle on top of the post.
When the above happens I cannot view any new posts in the list.. I just get
a blank with text saying "cannot be displayed".
Sometimes if I click a link in a post that I've already viewed the link does
not work
if I move to a different newsgroup the message list is blank even though
there are posts there.
The only thing that corrects these problems is to shut down OE and restart
it.

Things I've tried:
I have created a number of folders that I move most incoming messages to
using mail and newsgroup rules.
I always delete all items in the deleted items folder when I send messages
there so it's regularly emptied.
I have always clicked work offline and compacted regularly(previously at the
end of the day, now I do it much more often).
I've deleted the deleted items.dbx file
I've deleted all dbx files
I've created a new identity(twice) and deleted the old ones (I do not import
messages from the old one but save them elsewhere on my hd if I want to keep
them).

I've been wondering whether it's possible for the address book or mail and
news account settings to be corrupted since those are the only things that I
carry along to my new identity.
:-(
