One of the big reasons for creating a new Identity is to fix corruption in
the Registry.
You have more problems than Registry corruption would cause.

Things I've tried:
I have created a number of folders that I move most incoming messages to
using mail and newsgroup rules.
I always delete all items in the deleted items folder when I send messages
there so it's regularly emptied.
I have always clicked work offline and compacted regularly(previously at
the
end of the day, now I do it much more often).
I've deleted the deleted items.dbx file
I've deleted all dbx files
I've created a new identity(twice) and deleted the old ones (I do not
import
messages from the old one but save them elsewhere on my hd if I want to
keep
them).

I've been wondering whether it's possible for the address book or mail and
news account settings to be corrupted since those are the only things that
I
carry along to my new identity.
