Why is this so difficult to do? There is no 'link' option for a
specific file, just web pages. If I manage to copy a short cut to

It is possible to be able to click on a short cut which would then
open a simple Word doc? _I don't want to copy_ that Word doc to
Notes because it will change from time to time and I do not wish to
update both files. Is this just me ... or is this unnecessarily

Try specifying it not as a link but as a URL:
file:///c:\Documents%20and%20Settings\MyName\My%20Document s\MyFile.doc

This works for me.
