Outlook, or Outlook Express? If the later:

Contacts.dbx was from a user created folder in Outlook Express named
Contacts.

Can you do a search on the external drive? Do an Advanced search and include
Hidden Files and Folders, and search for:

*.wab

If that is not successful, in your current Address Book | Help | About will
show the path to that Address Book. The path for your old AB should be
similar on the external drive.
