Did you originally import those 4 messages from another mail client?
Each mail messages has multiple time stamps. You can see these in File,
Properties, Details.
When you look at the list of messages in Microsoft IE3 Internet Mail or
IE4+ Outlook Express, the Received time is when the message was received
by your ISP's mail server. The server supplies the time. This is the
first (top most) of possibly several "Received:" lines in the message
header. Each mail server that a message passes through adds its own
Received line. These are in reverse order, so that the bottom most one
listed is the first server that received the message from the sender.
When you open or print a message, the time displayed is from the
sender's PC when he wrote the message, not necessarily when he
transmitted it (depends on the mail client). The time comes from his
PC. This is the "Date:" line in the message header.
A Sent Message would not have any Received headers.
Some mail clients don't put in the Date header in saved messages, it's
only inserted as the message is sent to the mail server.
On import, if OE doesn't find the date, it will use today's date.

Jim,
But why those 4 in particular, and, now they are undoubtedly out of
the
chronological order of the rest of the emails.

The date change occurs when you import the mails. It does not change
the
original message at all as you can see if you highlight the message
and
press Ctrl+F3 to examine the headers. It's just an indication of the
last
date on which the file was "touched", i.e., modified.

Something weird -----
I have an OE 6 folder named SENT 2004. Emails I sent in 2004 are
kept in
that folder.
Today, March 6, I created another Identity, XYZ 2004. I imported
folders
and messages into it from the current identity, JBS.
Now I discover that 4 emails in the SENT 2004 folder in the XYZ 2004
identity are dated today's date (and all have the same time), but
they are
2004 emails. In checking the SENT 2004 folder in the JBS identity, I
see
those 4 emails are dated 1/11/2006 5:18 PM -- that is about the date
I
imported the folder from OE 5.5.
Can anyone explain why the date changes on those 4 emails?
Jack
