For several years now I am sharing my Outlook 2002 contacts with O.E.6 by
setting UseOutlook to 1 (recipe from insideoe.tomsterdam).
Beginning last year I'm using a second PC on which I only have O.E.6 and
I
started to gradually build up the address book, because I do not know of
a
better system. This job is far from complete.
A week or so ago I noticed in this newsgroup a posting dealing with the
same problem, and the given solution was: Unshare, export the contacts to
a
CSV file and then import the file into the O.E.address book. The person
involved was successful in doing so, but I am not!
Importing works but the resulting addressbook is a mess! I suppose I do
not know how to "assign fields". Someone can help me please ?

1. Export your current Address Book as a TXT (CSV) file via Address Book
File Export Other Address Book ....
2. Examine the formatting of the CSV you just exported then format the
CSV
exported from OL to conform to it. (MS Excel would be a handy
application
to use for this.)
3. Despite the above, importing the correctly formatted CSV file from OL
might still make a mess of your current Address Book. Consider creating
a
Standalone Address Book and importing the OL data into it instead. See
http://www.insideoe.com/files/wab.htm#wabexe and note the restrictions
when using a Standalone to compose/send a message.
If/when you need to update the Standalone, delete the current one, create
a new one and then import the new data into it.
Exporting works fine.
I have MS Excel with basic knowledge, made a backup of my
Administrator.wab, and cleared the existing address book.
In Excel, all data seems to be situated in column A, and I gave order to
arrange things from AZ.
Exporting works fine. During import I have to define which field I want
to
import, only one field can be chosen and I only had success by choosing
"name".
This results in a address book with only names. Repeating the process to
add
more and choosing a other field results in Error while importing...
Not arranging the data from AZ is also no successful.
Your point 2. formatting the CSV will be my weak point ??
The contact listing as displayed in Address Book can have a maximum of four
(4) fields. Try formatting the CSV to be imported with only four (4)
fields, two (2) of them being Name and E-mail Address.
When sharing Outlook and O.E. there is a "engine" inside one of the
programs
that does the transformation.
Does such engine exist in a stand alone version?
If sharing with OL is enabled, the default Address Book is used so no, you
cannot have OL sharing contacts in the Standalone Address Book.
All this is truly an arcane, fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants science. There's
no documentation about it whatsoever.
You must understand that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made
while sharing with OL was enabled will not be available (displayed) in
Address Book when sharing is disabled. This is by default.
