incoming emails not visible
At last, the answer. It was "_2" missing from the user name, because I am
the second user on the computer.
Thank you for your persistence, despite the wild goose chases. Does this
mean that Symantec is reprieved?

I would be very grateful for any other suggestions. I keep feeling

this investigation afterwards. (I am due to retire from my company
in January, at which point I hand in my company computer and email
address and will be dependent upon this working.)
Alas, without being able to see your PC, I'm at a loss to suggest anything
else. Perhaps some other person will have an idea.
