If you click Send/Receive, even if the process has started, there is a
dialog box with a Stop button. Perhaps that way? Or he could just terminate
the connection.

The result would be that the message is still on the server. I would assume
he has a message rule to Delete it from server for messages larger than X
size that is normally unchecked. If he checks the rule and downloads again,
the large message will be removed from the server and not downloaded.

load...how does he do that? He's with Orange Service Provider and uses
Outlook Express for mail.
