Check your owner's manual. My Dell computer, which was initially loaded
with Windows ME, will only take 512 MB. You can put more in, but it won't
do any more than the 512.

The 32-bit versions of WinXP supports 4 GB of RAM, but it won't all be
available because some of the address space will be used by the machine's
components. Generally a little over 3 GB is all you'll see. If course
this assumes that your motherboard will handle 4 GB of RAM.
