I don't see an index card at the bottom of the letter list. However, there
is a region wherein I click and get a list of languages (apparently the
button is really there but its image is not drawn). But when I click one
of
these languages, the contact-index area gets wider, but no additional
buttons
appear.

Do you know what I can try next?

Have you tried clicking on the little index card at the bottom of the
letter
list and choose a character set.

In Outlook 2007, how do I change the language (alphabet) of the index
tabs
in
the Address Cards view of Contacts?
