because of the way gmail works, sent messages will be downloaded with pop
(and put in the inbox). But to download old messages, you need to redo the
profile after setting the gmail options to download them.

While what Castell said will apply to your gmail Inbox, it can't apply to
the gmail "Sent Mail" folder if you're using a POP account to access
gmail. POP protocols have no ability to access folders. Only what's in
the Inbox on the server is available for download.
