When you create a new identity, the old identity is still there
unchanged. So you won't cause any harm.
The problem may be nothing to do with the OE identity but rather the
Protected Storage on the registry. In the same article, see
Method 3: Back up your registry and remove the user account information
from the Protected Storage System Provider subkey. Then, reenter your
password options.
Although some people are hesitant to edit the registry.

I have a senior citizen friend in another town that has this problem.

not have Outlook, so I attempted to use the procedure under "Create a
new Outlook Express identity", but when I got to the Accounts window
in Outlook Express, the previous accounts did not appear.
This scared me, so I abandoned the effort. If this procedure is
completed, will it knock out the previous e-mail account?
