Default Paper-clip symbol in Inbox, but no attachment

OK, thanks. WillCo.

Lose the e-mail scanning. The paper clip is the least of your worries.

Turning off e-mail scanning is safe. See:

Viral Irony: The Most Common Cause of Corruption.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/...ion.mspx#EOAAC

And:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3

And this is from Symantec, but applies to all anti-virus programs.

Is my computer still protected against viruses if I disable Email
Scanning?

Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses
that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect
scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email
and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of
this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection,
keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you
have the most recent virus definitions.

Reinstall AVG and choose Custom Mode. Uncheck E-mail Scanning when you see
that option. For some reason, just unchecking it in the security center
causes a conflict with the Windows Security Center.

I don't have "Read messages in plain text" selected but I do use AVG email
scanning, and I'll bet the latter is the culprit. However, I guess I'll
just have to live with the Paper-clips, because I want to keep the AVG
scanning. Thanks for your reply.

Whenever I receive an HTML email in my Inbox it has the Paper-clip
symbol in the Inbox listing even if the HTML email has no attachment.
What could be causing this?
I am using WinXP SP2, Home Edition and Outlook Express 6.

Tools | Options | Read
turn off the option to read all messages in plain text.
If you're using AVG turn off email scanning.
