The signature in the news posting always seems to come out in Arial. The
conversion to TR seems only to occur on replies to Emails. But
it seems almost random. That is, on some replies the signature is
Arial, on others, it's TR. I can get TR even when the message I
reply to is Arial. I can't see any pattern

If sending to a newsgroup you should use plain text and your signature will
be in the same font as the body as set in the recipients default.
