Thank you for the responses. I've tried both solutions, SCANPST and the
search for a stuck read receipt.
1. Scanpst initially found errors, fixed them, and on a second scan reported
no errors. However, even after running with the /resetfolders and
/cleanreminders switches, the problem was unsolved.
2. The tool did not detect a stuck read receipt (the middle pane was empty.)
I'm considering a reinstall of Office 2007 as my next option. If you have
any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.
One other bizarre glitch, which may or may not be affected. I've had
intermittent problems with hotmail accounts that are included in my mail runs
(I have two, neither of which is set for outlook connector, but both of which
intermittently report that they can't synchronize headers - my workaround has
been to delete the account and then reinstall it, after which it works fine
for a while...then the problem recurs, apparently randomly.)
On the create a new profile option, I'm not sure what you mean. As in, a new
mail account?
Thanks for your patience.

Oh, something else to try as well. See this page:
http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/d...eadreceipt.htm
In the second picture on that page, the MDBVU32 tool shows the Reminders
folder. Using that tool, select that folder and clear out the reminders
that may be there. Then try the /cleanreminders command switch.
