Robert,
I followed your advice and since I was having the same problem with the
Recycle Bin I also posted in the XP group. There I got the suggestion to
bypass the Bin when deleting so I did that and the same when deleting in OE.
I reasoned that if my deletions were never in those folders there was no
chance they could re-appear there. It has only been one day but so far all
is well. I will watch for a week and then report my results in a brand new
post to your attention. Thanks again.

corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional
