Default Problem restoring Outlook 2003 PST file

I recently lost my pc in a power outage. Luckily, I was able to
salvage the hard drive and copied the outlook.pst file to a CD.

I am having trouble with Outlook recognizing my Contacts. Here is
what I did:

I opened up Outlook 2003 for the first time and receive the normal
‘welcome’ email. I then go to File\Open\Outlook Data File and opened
up the outlook.pst file. When I ‘click’ on Contacts, I do see my
address book, however

a) if I try to add a new contact, it adds it to another contact
list

b) if I edit a contact, the custom categories that I created on
my old pc, no longer show up in the list of categories,

c) when I type a new email and press the “To” button to look up
a contact, no contacts exist in the “Select Names” window

I read some help text and thought that perhaps what I was looking at
was a Personal Address Book. I used the Import/Export wizard and
tried to import the Personal Address Book (mailbox.PAB) into the
folder: Contacts. The process completed quickly and there was no
change in the results. When typing a new email, Outlook does not
recognize my contact list for me to select from.

Any ideas?
